Hallmark would have you think that Jesus came into the world with a soft glow on a silent night, with just-cleaned animals there to welcome him. Makes for a nice Christmas card, but doesn't fit with history. A more accurate picture finds Jesus living in extreme poverty - lower than a peasant, in fact. Times were so bad he probably had a rebellious tone toward Rome and the religious leaders who sat idly by while their Jewish brothers and sisters suffered. How do these realities reshape our understanding of Jesus and what it means to follow in his footsteps?
